It arrived at The Brick across from No Frills, where smoke was bellowing out.

“When I came on scene, I did see smoke coming from the building,” said Lieutenant Patrick Connellan, the Incident Commander for the Scene. “So, we also called in fire department crews from the County of Northern Lights. And we also sought mutual aid from Northern Sunrise County.”

It took some time, but they were able to get things under control.

“There was some extensive smoke damage,” said Senior Captain Mike Frayne. “The fire damage was mostly in the warehouse area, which fire crews were able to extinguish fairly quickly, due to crews doing an initial knockdown. Like I said though, most of the damage so far was due to smoke.”

The investigation into what caused the fire to break out continues at this time. Crews say it’s likely that The Brick is going to be shut down for the next few days.

“There’s still a little bit left for us to do yet,” Connellan continued. “We still got to go in with our gas monitors to make sure that the air quality is safe. But at this point, it’s a loss stop, so there’s no further damage being done to the building.”

Both Connellan and Frayne commended the fire crews from the PRFD, the County of Northern Lights and Northern Sunrise County for their quick response.

“We were able to get her quickly,” said Connellan. “We managed the fire like we were taught to during practice, and so, there was excellent practicing from both counties, as well as the Town of Peace River, and I think that did a lot to stifle the fire, and stop it in its tracks.”
