Jessica Whelan will be spending a lot of time in Grimshaw starting in February.

The E.E. Oliver teacher has been promoted and becomes the Peace River School Division’s new Divisional Literacy Program Coordinator.

Whelan tells the Trending 55 Newsroom that this is a very exciting opportunity.

“Being from the area, it is really nice to be recognized within the area and to be able to come home and work for the school division that grew me into the person that I am, it’s exciting,” says Whelan.

Whelan says as much as she is looking forward to her new role, she will miss her students and colleagues at E.E. Oliver.

“It’s a little bittersweet to be leaving,” admits Whelan.

“I am excited for the new role but very sad to be leaving. The staff is amazing, the kids are wonderful, the parents are so good and it is definitely hard to leave.”

As she steps into her new position as-of February 1, she says he ultimate goal is to support the teachers within the division.

“I really want to help teachers help their kids to read,” explains Whelan.

“Anything I can do to support the teachers in our division; that is really what I want to bring.”

She has spent the last 12 years working in education.

In her free time, Whelan tells us she spends lots of time with her family and they enjoy snowboarding and curling in the winter, and camping in the summer.
