A family in Fairview is raising money to get treatment for a medical disorder that their son has.

Max Sych has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and according to his father Bowden, there’s a particular type of drug they want to get for his treatment.

“Zolgensma is a gene therapy because SMA is a genetic disease basically meaning that he’s missing a gene that helps him with proper muscle development. This medication would replace that gene, allowing him to walk and hopefully lead a healthy normal life.”

Zolgensma is a drug that is not funded by Health Canada and the cost to get it is around $2.8 million.

The family has started a GoFundMe campaign which at the time of this writing is currently at almost $500,000.

Bowden says the support they’ve received has been quote “unbelievable”.

“The Peace Country has come together and basically taken this on and said we’re gonna get Max there. The generosity that we’ve received has been unbelievable. There is no other words for it. It’s crazy.”
