Canada Post workers have issued a strike notice, set to commence on Friday, May 23, at 12 a.m. local time.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) notified Canada Post on Monday that both urban and rural and suburban mail carriers plan to initiate strike action.
Operations will continue as usual until then, but Canada Post warns that a labour disruption could affect millions of Canadians and businesses relying on postal services.
In the event of rotating strikes, Canada Post intends to maintain deliveries in unaffected areas while striving to reach negotiated agreements.
However, customers may experience delays.
This potential strike follows a previous work stoppage in late 2024, which lasted over a month and resulted in significant disruptions.
During that period, the federal government intervened to end the strike, and an Industrial Inquiry Commission was established to address ongoing disputes.
The Commission’s report is due by May 15, 2025.
If a national labour disruption occurs, mail and parcels will not be delivered, and no new items will be accepted until the disruption ends.
However, socio-economic cheques will continue to be delivered to ensure that government financial assistance reaches those who rely on it.
