The future of the Fairview Curling Club is in doubt after they were unable to open this past season.
Tracy Watchorn, the acting president of the club, says problems with the roof of their building meant that local curlers had to play out of other clubs this past season.
“The insurance company has declined coverage, so now the full brunt of the cost will become the responsibility of the town as they own the building, but they’re telling us that they don’t have the funds available so it’s gonna fall back on the club and fundraising and grants and whatnot to save up on the cost of repairs or rebuilding.”
Watchorn says they should know in the coming months as to the full scope of what work will need to be done on the building.
She adds that the local curling community did get a lot of help from other clubs in the region.
“All the smaller local clubs reached out to us, told us they would do anything that they could do for our members to come and curl there. We were very fortunate that there is another club that’s about 20 minutes away in Whitelaw and the majority of our curlers went there. A few of them supported the leagues and bonspiels in the region.”
The Town of Fairview is doing studies on whether the roof of the building can be repaired, and Watchorn says it’s very likely that they won’t be opening again next season.
