Big Lakes County council is set to address critical issues drug awareness education and drug enforcement in meetings Alberta cabinet ministers from November 4-7.

At their October 23 meeting, the council finalized briefing notes to advocate for comprehensive drug-awareness education in schools and enhanced enforcement measures.

They plan to discuss these issues with Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis, Justice Minister Mickey Amery, Mental Health and Addiction Minister Dan Williams, and Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides.

The council is urging ministers to engage various education stakeholders, including school administrators, teachers, and Alberta Health Services, to implement evidence-based drug-awareness programs tailored to students’ needs.

They emphasize the importance of addressing substance abuse through education and enforcement, considering socio-economic and cultural factors.

A particular concern is the lack of drug-awareness programs for Indigenous students at Kinuso School, Joussard School, and Grouard Northland School, as these are not located in Indigenous communities. This issue was highlighted in a previous council meeting with RCMP representatives.

Additionally, the council will discuss the potential transition to a provincial police force with Ellis and Amery, seeking clarity on whether it would enhance policing services and accountability.

They have also scheduled a meeting with the RCMP to request a sergeant for Faust RCMP, a dog handler position, and housing for officers to improve recruitment and retention, especially for experienced personnel.
