Big Lakes County is urging the provincial government to approve land dispositions for the Northern Lights Wind Power Project, planned near Swan Hills.
The project, developed by Potentia Renewables, is expected to generate significant municipal revenue and economic opportunities, including up to 1,000 jobs.
The project, which includes 60 wind turbines and related infrastructure, is scheduled for construction between 2026 and 2027.
The project gained support from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas in 2022 as a pilot for renewable energy on Crown land.
Potentia plans to file applications with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in early 2025, with a decision expected within 120 days if no public hearing is held.
The company is committed to community engagement and plans to establish a Community Benefit Fund.
The project aims to provide low-cost power and economic development without financial burden on municipal or provincial governments.
