The Alberta Teachers’ Association says some school board in the Peace Region will be getting less provincial money for the upcoming school year, and could have less teachers.
The ATA says the school jurisdiction funding profiles, posted to the Government of Alberta website on May 6, outline the provincial funding each school board will get for the next school year.
It claims that the Northland School Division, Peace Wapiti School Division, Holy Family Catholic Separate School Division and Northwest Francophone Education Region are among 13 school divisions across the province being affected and will likely experience even larger class sizes and program cuts when school starts in the fall as a result of these cuts.
Jason Schilling, the president of the ATA, says cutting public education funding is unacceptable and there’s fears about potential layoffs.
