Alberta Canola Producers looking for growers to join Board of Directors

Spots on the Board of Directors for the Alberta Canola Producers Commission are vacant, and they want growers from Regions 3, 6, 9 & 12 to be nominated to serve on the board.

Region 3 Director Denis Guindon is not eligible for re-election as he is completing his second term this year, so the region is looking for a new one. The region includes: the Municipal District of Opportunity No. 17, Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124, M.D. of Smoky River No. 130, Northern Sunrise County, Municipal District of Big Lakes and any city/town/village or summer village residing withing the areas listed.

To be eligible for the Board of Directors:

  • The person must be an eligible canola producer of the region in which the election is being held
    • An eligible producer is defined as any producer who has grown canola in Alberta or is entitled to a share of canola grown in Alberta under a crop share arrangement, and who has paid or submitted a commission service charge on canola sold within the past two years
  • An eligible producer may be an individual, a corporation, partnership or an organization other than a corporation or partnership.
    • If an eligible producer is not an individual, then the corporation, etc., may appoint a representative to act on its behalf, as an eligible producer, including voting in an election, and standing for office.

A term for an Alberta Canola Director is three years and can be re-elected for a second term. Directors can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.

We spoke with the Board Chair, Kevin Serfas about nominations and serving on the board. Serfas served two consecutive terms for Region 9 and became the Board Chair afterwards.

Serfas suggests to anyone on the fence for nominating themselves to be on the board to “do it!” Serfas says “I don’t think I had any intention of ever becoming Chair, but I found over the years that you get out of things what you put into them and I was really enjoying what I was doing working people, staff, representing canola farmers.” He commented it was a natural progression for him to become Chair and he’s glad he did so.

The nomination deadline for the board of directors is October 29, 2021 and must be filed to the Commission office – 14560-116 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 3E9, in writing before 4:00 p.m.

Nominations form have to be:

  • Signed by at least ten eligible producers of the region in which the election is to be held; and,
  • Accompanied by the written consent of the eligible producer nominated as a director.
