Affordability Main Topic In Parliament Session

The topic of affordability is top of mind for Members of Parliament beginning the fall session in Ottawa this week.

The MP for Grande Prairie-Mackenzie, Chris Warkentin, says the inflation issues are the result of “out of control” government spending.

“Reports out today that we’re still seeing out of control inflation directly corresponding to what the government has done. The government continues to not listen to the experts, people including like John Manley, the former Liberal finance minister that is warning the government that this continued activity is going to lead to an affordability crisis that’s going to continue to worsen.”

The Liberals have called on grocery companies to stabilize food prices, but Warkentin says those rising prices have been the result of government actions.

“What we’re seeing every single time that the government raises the carbon tax, farmers pay that, the truckers pay that, the manufacturers and the distribution companies pay this additional carbon tax. The government wants to triple that carbon tax over the next little while here and we know at the end of the day that the consumer always pays that price.”

Warkentin says cutting the carbon tax for farmers and truckers on the supply chain would make a bigger difference on grocery prices.
