Movie Monday Mentions: Avatar: Fire and Ash

Third time’s the charm,

This is the latest installment of James Cameron’s Avatar. This movie picks up just a little bit after the second film, with the Sully family now living with the water tribe. Life is good…until it isn’t. Their adopted human child, Spider, needs air to breathe, and he can’t live with them like this for long, so they set out to bring him back to the humans when they are ambushed by the fire tribe.

The fire tribe is interesting and a bit more ruthless than the other tribes. I liked their designs, weapons, and leader Varang. She brought this movie to life. Unlike most Na’vi, Varang is willing to embrace the human technology if it can bring her tribe power. She will also use their hair connections to mind control other Na’vi and make it easier to kill them. I thought her differences of ideals brought a bit of fresh air to the franchise.

The rest of the movie involves a lot of getting captured and rescues and captures and rescues, but I thought it was fun to see on the big screen. The plot has never been the strong suit of these movies; it’s always been the world and seeing all the pretty visuals. Now, the saddest part is that we don’t get a lot from the new fire tribe’s region. We see one area…and that’s about it. I would have liked to see more of the flora and fauna from that region, but maybe that was the point…that there wasn’t a lot? Either way, we spend a lot of time in the water tribe retreading similar ground wich is a criticism some people have, but i din’t think it was too bad.

overall if you’re invested in the franchise, this one is worth seeing, and I do think it is better than the second one. If you want to see more, check out the trailer below, if only to see more beautiful visuals from the film.
