Alberta Independence Petition Circulating in Peace Region

alberta-flag
An Alberta Independence Referendum petition has been circulating throughout the Peace Region this week, with canvassers appearing at various locations in Peace River, Fairview, and Grande Prairie.
The petition is part of a 120-day signature collection period that officially began January 3 and runs until approximately May 2. Organizers must gather roughly 177,000 valid signatures province-wide in order to trigger a referendum. That number represents 10% of eligible voters from Alberta’s most recent provincial election.
Residents are being reminded that signing the petition does not constitute a vote to separate from Canada. Instead, the petition seeks to initiate a referendum that would ask voters the question: “Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”
Under provincial rules, all signatures must be collected in person and must be wet signatures, meaning they are signed by hand using pen and paper. Online or digital signatures are not permitted.
Those looking for more information about the petition, including future signing locations in the area, can visit StayFreeAlberta.com.
