The leader of the NDP believes that the talk around Alberta seperation will have negative effects on Alberta’s economy.
Naheed Nenshi says the likelihood of a referendum on the issue next summer, could likely repel any investments into the province.
“Not one person is going to invest one dollar in Alberta while this nonsense is going on. She (Premier Danielle Smith) has basically put our economy on pause for at least a year causing incredible instability just because she has no record she can point to of things she’s actually accomplished, so she needs to shift the blame to someone else.”
Another major topic in Alberta recently has been the future of Alberta’s energy sector.
Many discussions have happened locally around the nuclear power plant project in Peace River.
Nenshi says while he likes the idea, he is skeptical about the UCP government being able to manage such a project.
“What’s very clear is as the economy electrifies, we need to look at multiple sources of generation that make sense economically and environmentally. That said, conservative governments for many many years have used nuclear as an excuse not to do anything. We don’t like solar, we don’t like wind, we love nuclear but we’re never going to actually build one.”
Nenshi also points out that under the UCP, utility rates for electricity have increased significantly.
