Energy Alberta has submitted its Initial Project Description (IPD) to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) for the proposed Peace River Nuclear Power Project.
This initiative aims to diversify Alberta’s energy portfolio by providing safe, secure, and affordable electricity, while creating jobs and economic opportunities.
The Impact Assessment, led by the IAAC and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, will evaluate the project’s potential effects on the environment, health, society, economy, and Indigenous peoples’ rights.
The project proposes building a nuclear power station in Northern Alberta with up to four 1,000MW-class CANDU® MONARK™ reactors, contributing significantly to the province’s electricity generation.
The facility is expected to create thousands of jobs and support Alberta’s economic growth.
Public feedback on the IPD is invited from April 14 to May 14, 2025, as part of a multi-year assessment process.
