Alberta Government Supporting Food Banks

The Alberta Government is ensuring that Food Banks in the province continue to receive funds.

With the rising cost of living, food banks are being used more than ever before.

To help increase food security for Albertans, the government is once again providing $10 million to food banks and community organizations across the province.

“Nobody should ever be left wondering where their next meal will come from. With this funding, more Albertans across the province will have access to critical supports to get the food they need. The rising cost of living has put increased pressures on many communities across the province and our government will continue to have Albertans backs.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services

Since 2020 $26 million has been allocated for food banks and organizations across Alberta:

  • 2020-2021 – $6 million
  • 2022 – $10 million
  • 2023 – $10 million

In a release the Alberta government says that “this is part of a commitment to deliver adequate, ongoing funding to food banks to ensure Alberta families can put nutritious food on their tables.”

“Food banks in Alberta embody the ideal of making the very most out of what you have been given. Through the generosity of everyday Albertans and the support of our government, we can continue this work of doing what needs to be done to address food insecurity in our communities with consideration, compassion, efficiency, and effectiveness.”

Shawna Bissell, executive director, Food Banks Alberta
Many local Food Banks are in need of support this time of the year, as programs like Christmas Hampers are launched.
In the Trending 55 Web Poll this week, we ask you whether or not all levels of government should be providing monetary support to Food Banks.
