Peace River Town Council met last night. Here are some highlights:
A report was given by Chase Milligen, Regional Director, Transportation and Economic Corridors – Peace Region.
The Peace River Bridge Project is taking longer than predicted.
Design and alignment issues have popped up while working on the arch bridge.
Occupational Health & Safety laws in effect now, compared to when the bridge was first built, has created problems with completing some of the upgrades.
Both bridges may be open to traffic through the winter, but the arch bridge would have to be closed again in next summer so they can complete the project.
Paving on all highways leading into and out of Peace River continues. Part of the 3 year plan is to upgrade all the pavement surrounding the town.
Roma Drive junction to Grimshaw Corner will be paved next year.
Also on the list is Highway 744 from town through part of Judah Hill, up towards the Marie Reine area.
Crews will be looking at the West Hill lights.
Hope to fix the flashing red light issue that occurs.
It’ll be investigated later this year.
They’ll also be looking at the lights further West (third set), and could change how long people have to wait if trying to enter the main highway from past the hospital.
The Peace River Art Club was awarded $7500
They were given the funds from the grants to organizations fund.
Points made by councillors included that the art club has proven to have community-wide support, that it’s contributed to the revitalization of downtown, and that all the money granted will be spent locally.
Peace River Pride Society asked for funds to hold a quarterly event at the Peace Regional Pool.
The group’s Chairperson Victoria Champion did a presentation on the Peace River Pride Society, outlining what they do, how their membership has grown to around 50 people, and how the events will create a safe space for the LGBTQ2+ community.
The Pride Society is asking for $1000, to mainly cover the rental fee.
It’ll be discussed at a future council meeting.
The Underground Music Society was also given a small grant of $700.
Council’s discussion centered around the presented budget and how to ensure that the Underground Music Society can continue to sustain themselves moving forward.
The Peace Regional Waste Management Company asked for support to apply for a Green Municipal Fund Grant to help with their Pyrolysis Facility Expansion Project.
It’s a system that uses thermal decomposition to break down materials.
Council agreed to work in collaboration with PRWMC by providing a support letter.
Discussion Continued on the Council Remuneration Policy.
It’s a topic that has been part of many council meetings.
They continue to make changes, and the next draft of the policy is expected at a future meeting.
