Less Than 1% Seeding Complete in First Crop Report

A heavy winter snowpack, and an unseasonably cool and snowy spring have impacted the start of seeding in the region.
While the additional moisture was welcome, persistent cool conditions have resulted in a later start as it’s taken extra time for snow to melt and fields to dry.
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation delivered it’s first Alberta Crop Report.  The May 5 figures show the Peace Region is just beginning to seed, with progress at less than 1%.  The 5-year average is 6%.
Sub-surface moisture levels as of the first report have 45% of fields in the region at a good level, 40% excellent, 14% excessive, and 1% fair.
