Alberta River Basins has ended the River Ice Advisory for Peace River as river break up in town is all but complete.
The Town advises residents to use caution near riverbanks as recently submerged areas may be slippery, the water is flowing fast and is very cold.
2026 was a rollercoaster river break for the town of Peace River which was set up by a high snowpack from a winter which had accumulation totals not seen in 60 years.
During the break up, the community navigated an increased flood risk, ice jams, an ice jam watch, emergency flood alert for downtown and areas near the Heart River, and a state of local emergency.
The 2026 river break up underscored the importance of preparedness, communication, and the coordinated response demonstrated by town officials and residents.
