Nuclear Energy Potential For Alberta

Some more steps have been taken by the provincial government when it comes to having nuclear power in Alberta’s energy grid.

The Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel released their report which Affordability and Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf says provides a path for potentially moving forward.

“We’re going to create a nuclear energy roadmap that just explains to Albertans what we’re going to do, when we’re going to do it, how would we do it and provide a pathway to say is this going to happen tomorrow or is this going to take 20-30 years. It’s probably somewhere in the middle. If we were really to be moving quickly, maybe 10 years from now we’d see that happening.”

The report follows months of provincewide consultations with industry experts, Indigenous communities and municipalities, including a public engagement session in Peace River.

Energy Alberta is behind a potential nuclear project in Peace River.

Neudorf says they have been working with them.

“We’ve asked them to make sure that they stay in step with the government because we do need to do this initial engagement, we need to do the roadmap, following approval from the public we would make sure that we have legislation and regulation. Then there’s the next step which is duty to consult with First Nations that may be impacted.”

Neudorf says the province is moving toward developing a “nuclear framework” by the beginning of 2027.
