  1. Break-up of the Peace River, and its tributaries are continuing, with Ice Advisories in place.
    Right now, ice has collected in a 10 km-long ice jam, less than 10 km from the mouth of the Smoky River, but water levels are remaining low.
    Additional ice runs are expected from the Upper Smoky and Little Smoky rivers overnight and over the next few days.
  2. High Prairie Town Council has introduced new taxes for vacant properties.
    Residential properties are facing a rate twice the standard rate, while non-residential properties face a rate, two-and-a-half times higher.
  3. Questions and concerns have been raised recently regarding the future of schools in the area.
    After the Holy Family Regional Catholic Division announced the closure of Ecole Providence in McLennan, the Peace River School Division was inquired about the future of the school in Nampa.
  4. Northern Lakes College has successfully completed its student residence building in High Prairie.
    The new space is designed to support 26 students and features 14 units, each accommodating shared living spaces, as well as offer opportunities for students to work, connect, collaborate and relax.
  5. This week is the start of the suspension of the Federal Gas taxes, where prices at the pumps are expected to dip a little.
    Some stations in the Peace Region have lowered their prices, which would spell some relief to motorists.
  6. Energy Alberta has entered into a collaboration agreement with Bruce Power, based in Ontario, in regards to the Peace River Nuclear Power project.
    The project itself, is in the planning phase of the regulatory process, with the first phase to be in operation by 2035.
  7. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has found some potential adverse effects into the proposed Natural Gas plant, northeast of Peace River.
    The next step is for the project committee to get any necessary federal and provincial authorizations and permits for the project.
  8. Two major players in the online sports gambling industry are moving to enter the Alberta market as the province prepares to open iGaming to private operators this summer.
    The province is following Ontario in opening its online gambling market to private companies under a regulated provincial framework.
  9. NHL playoffs tonight… Game 1 – Anaheim is in Edmonton.
    Games 2 – Minnesota is in Dallas, Philidelphia is in Pittsburgh, and Ottawa is in Carolina. The Wild, Flyers and Hurricanes took the openers.
  10. The Toronto Blue Jays start a three-game set in Anaheim tonight. Dylan Cease starts for the Jays against Reid Detmers.
  11. Lots of sunshine is in store for the Northwest for the next 36 hours. Highs today are nudging 10 degrees, with low tonight just below zero.
    Might see some precipitation in the Big Lakes on Wednesday.
