The Town of High Prairie is introducing new tax measures in 2026 focused on vacant properties and a minimum tax amount.
Vacant properties will now face higher rates. Residential vacant properties will be taxed at 2 times the base municipal rate, with non-residential properties at 2.5 times. The Town says the increase is intended to ensure fairness in the tax system, help provide relief to residents and businesses occupying, utilizing and investing in their properties, while encouraging the productive use of land and buildings.
At the same time, a minimum annual municipal tax of $700 will apply to all properties, regardless of assessed value. Officials say the baseline will help create a more stable revenue stream and ensure every property contributes to essential services.
The Town says “these changes are intended to support a fair and balanced tax system by aligning tax responsibility with property use and ensuring all properties contribute to municipal services”.
