The Last Rodeo is a film from Angel, the same company that gave the world The Sound of Freedom and the recent well received animated film The King of Kings, gives us a story worth telling. The film stars Neal McDonough as Joe Wainright a retired multiple time world bull riding champion and you may also recognize Christopher McDonald in the film as well, best known as Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, a role he’s reprising in the sequel Happy Gilmore 2.
The premise of the film is “To save his grandson, a retired rodeo star enters a high-stakes bull-riding competition. Along the way, he confronts his past, discovers faith, and proves that true courage lies in family.”
The movie might be a bit of a predictable movie but yet it does keep you on the edge seat every time Joe hops on the bull. Neal does a great job as the stubborn and troubled Joe Wainright who is lost since the passing of his wife due to a brain tumor. It is a movie that has the ability to tug on the heartstrings and finds it’s self delivering a message of faith but not in a showy or you must praise Jesus way rather opting for more of a subtle approach which was nice to see. While it may or may not have meant to it does bring the idea of people desperate to do anything to be able deal with the insane cost of medical expenses in the US and the lengths one must go to be able to afford life saving medical treatment.
The story does take place over a short amount of time which would be the only notable thing for me at least basically the main story is over the course of a few days which rushes it to them trying to get into the PBR event. That would be the only real criticism I have that stands out with the film. I am sur if I give it another watch I can nit pick it more but on the face of it there isn’t much I disliked.
Final Grade: 9/10
