The Elevator Door Shuts

So back on April 1st I moved out of the HI Hostel and decided in the lead up I should shoot my shot and ask out this cute girl I worked with (who will remain nameless). The idea of shooting your shot to me comes from the song “As She’s Walking Away” by Zac Brown Band and Alan Jackson. I figured I had very little chance of her saying yes, but still believed there was a chance as she always seemed to smile around me and laugh, never thought much of it to be honest more so than her being nice or maybe I actually am that funny. She happens to be from Quebec so I thought my slim odds would improve if I asked her out in French from maybe 5% to 15%. So after the car was packed up to move to my new staff accommodations she was alone so I grabbed a coffee from the café she works at and asked her “Je voulais savoir si tu voulais sortir avec moi ce week-end” which is simply “I wanted to know if you wanted to go out with me this weekend.” She had a big smile on her face and said “wow you are speaking French,” I began to think she was actually going to say yes at that point. Unfortunately she said she was really late for her supervisor Zoom meeting. Not wanting to just wait around, not knowing how long it would take I moved somethings into the new accommodation. I went back to the hostel to grab my fan I didn’t have room for in my car, and didn’t think I would run into her, but I did and I asked about the question I asked earlier, but she didn’t seem to remember, and not remembering the phrase or wanting to pull out my phone I asked in English this time. “Well (Name Redacted) I was asking if you wanted to go out this weekend?” She replied “I don’t really go out much anymore,” in hindsight that was her probably saying no, “(Name Redacted) I wasn’t seeing if you want to party I was wanting to know if you wanted to go out on a date with me this weekend?” She was getting it elevator to go upstairs to her room and just says “uhh sorry” as the door closes in front of my face. Something out of a bad romcom movie/television show, or How I Met Your Mother actually happened to me in real life.

Well that was never the way I imagined it going but it has given me a story that either gets sympathy or laughter which both work for me. I did run into her a few times this month and safe to say it has been awkward to say the least and what positive feelings she had for me are appear to be gone, that can be story for another day.

At the end of the day life moves on.
