I love diving into movies knowing little about them and with the description calling this a comedy horror thriller I was intrigued.
The movie follows a group from the upper echelon as they go to an island for the best fine dining experience around. There is a trio of dudes from a tech company, a food writer and her editor, a movie star, a couple regulars and others. This group makes the movie interesting. You find out who they are and piece together why they are there through their dinner table conversations. It’s really cool and something that works well in this restaurant setting. Another couple that is attending, and the first one we are introduced to, is a foodie Tyler, played by Nicholas Hoult and his date Margot, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
This movie surprised me, it does a great job of making you feel uneasy through its sound design and what is happening. As the movie goes on you realize that something is off. The menu is a little strange but you might just chalk that up to the food being eccentric. That is until a certain course on the menu comes up than you realize that “yeah something is very wrong here”. Despite this unease it also made me laugh out loud a couple times. It found a way to crack a joke at the moment you would least expect it, which I thought was really well done.
They show a lot of good-looking food throughout the movie and they and they are proud of it. After every course, they have a close-up shot of the food along with what is in the dish. They had chef consultants to make sure that they cooked legitimate food and used proper processes. so it makes sense why they would want to show it off. plus it was sometimes used for comedic effects as well.
