The other day I remembered this movie I watched back when I was younger. The thing was, I watched it a very long time ago so all the details were a bit fuzzy. so, of course, I start trying to explain it to my family…
“ok guys so this movie was animated and there were dragons and a wizard who fought the evil guy, and then a guy lost an arm but there was also evil black sludge…”
yeah, so they thought that I sounded insane…
After doing some research I thought I might have found the movie that I was looking for and it was called Tales From Earthsea
here is the plot summary:
“In the land of Earthsea, a mysterious force threatens to plunge humanity into destruction and chaos. A powerful wizard named Sparrowhawk seeks the source of his world’s imbalance, and along the way rescues a runaway prince named Arren. When Sparrowhawk’s powers begin to weaken, he and Arren must join forces with a former priestess and her daughter to defeat an evil foe whose quest for immortality will destroy Earthsea.”
So… after watching it, it was the movie I was thinking of! First off this is an animated Studio Ghibli Movie so it looks great! Although it is a lot darker than I remember it being when I was younger. What I mean by that is some mature themes were talked about that I think went right over my head years ago.
The animation did a great job at really making the creepy things look…well creepy… and although the english voices weren’t quite matched up the whole time the voice acting was really good. Weirdly enough after looking into the reviews of this movie they were fairly lukewarm and many said it was the worst Studio Ghibli Movie.
Despite the reviews I enjoyed it. It was a really fun adventure. So, if you want to dive into a dark fantasy story you should give it a watch.
