There’s a new women’s hockey team coming to the region as Northwestern Polytechnic will have a collegiate team starting this fall.
Dr. Vanessa Sheane, the President and CEO of the school, says the starting of this team has been a work in progress for the past year.
“We were approached by community members and strong supporters of hockey and women’s hockey in the area. We think there’s a demand here, we think there’s enough athletes who would like to become student athletes at the collegiate level. We’ve been working with the groups and community supporters for a while and then submitted our application to the ACAC.”
While the team will play their home games at the Design Works Centre in Grande Prairie, Sheane says they are looking at promoting all their sports teams in other communities in the region.
Sheane says this will create more opportunities for female players to continue their careers.
“With all of our student recruitment and definitely student athlete recruitment, the more students we can recruit and retain from the area is better for the area. Student athletes want to go where they can play so having more opportunities in the region will intrigue those athletes to stay in the region.”
The team will play in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference and are currently recruiting players for next season.
