Ice Jam Watch Downgraded to Ice Advisory

alberta-rivers-map-april-25

Alberta River Basins has downgraded the Ice Jam Watch for the Peace River, Smoky River and Town of Peace River to an Ice Advisory.

The ice jam at the mouth of the Smoky River remains in place. The jam has reduced in size to a last reported 4km – having melted 2.5km over the past 24 hours. Water levels have also fallen by about 1 metre since its mid-week peak.

The ice jam on the Heart River also remains in place near the mouth in the Town of Peace River. Water levels at the ice jam have also fallen from its peak, and at this time no flood impacts are expected to the Town of Peace River from the Heart River.

On the Peace River, there are currently no flood impacts. The ice front remains intact through the Town and it continues its retreat. At last report from yesterday afternoon (April 24), it was 35km upstream of the Highway 2 bridge at the Town of Peace River.

Even though the alert levels have declined, the public is reminded that things can change and to continue staying informed, monitor updates, and have an emergency preparedness plan in place.
