An animation masterpiece!
I was behind on this series and didn’t watch the first one until the weekend before I saw the sequel. And bad guys, I was not familiar with your game. The sequel builds on everything the first one does in a fantastic way. We pick up after the first one, where the bad guys have now become good. They are trying to live normal, mundane lives, and it’s tough. Turns out finding a job with a criminal record is not the easiest, and I like how they kind of grapple with those consequences. before they get framed and pulled into the spotlight once again. So in order to prove their innocence, they have to do one last job.
The story was decent. I thought it was fun, and the natural progression was just bigger and bolder than the last. The character writing is fantastic, the characters have fantastic banter, and you get more than just a general vibe based on how they interact with each other. Plus, a lot of the jokes were well done, and they have things for the kids and adults, which is what I like to see in a family film. I also appreciate that they turned down the amount of fart jokes. Like I like it as much as the next guy, but you know we can move on.
The animation is honestly reason enough to go see this movie. It is a step up from the first, and not only do the character designs look great, but they also move fluidly and just have so many small details. There is a moment when the main character is playing with a key ring and flipping it back and forth between his fingers, and it looks so good. They didn’t need to do that, but they did! And don’t think it’s just small details, there are big, bombastic action scenes that had me wanting to rewatch it right there in the theatre after it played. They also switch into 2d for certain moments, which not only looks fantastic but adds to the energy.
Overall, I really liked this one. If you’re looking for a great family film that has something for everyone, I think The Bad Guys 2 definitely delivers.
