Movie Monday Mentions: F1 The Movie

I was on the edge of my seat and I wasn’t even racing!

F1 follows Sonny Hayes, an ex-F1 driver who has been living out of his van, drifting from race to race. When an old friend pulls him back into the professional world. He is tasked with bringing a failing F1 team back after it has been doing so badly that it’s about to be abolished. He has to team up with the young cocky Joshua Pearce and make a miracle happen.

The thing I like about this movie is our two leads both kind of…suck. They’re both characters with flaws although Sonny is older wiser and more “mature”. He plays dirty, he’s a player, and he HAS trauma. Joshua has an ego, he lets jealousy get the better of him and GETS trauma. Despite this, both characters throughout the movie have an arc and learn to work together.

By the end of the movie, there are a lot of questions they leave unanswered. Sonny always has playing cards on him and he always takes one before a race. We never really get told why. We also see Joshua hanging out with his crush near the end of the film. Do they get together? These are just to name a few without going into too much detail. I kind of like that the movie doesn’t explain everything it gives the audience a chance to speculate and formulate their own opinions and outcomes which I thought was a nice change of pace as opposed to some other films that over-explain.

The cinematography in this movie was great as well. I loved just how a lot of the scenes looked. Whether it was a late-night conversation, the cars out on the track, or even just a laundromat it all looked so nice and I just wanted to be there in person.

The soundtrack in this movie has a lot of big names on it including Ed Sheeran, Tate McRae, Tiësto, Rosé, Doja Cat and many others. There were a lot of stand-out tunes and they all helped drive home this intense underdog story.

Overall I thought it was a really good time. F1 is not typically my thing I don’t really know a lot about it but this movie doesn’t make you feel left out. I was along for the ride the entire time and I love a good underdog story. If you want to see more check out the dramatic trailer below.
