Sinners: A Sin Not To See

share-2

Sinners might be one of the biggest surprises of 2025 at the movie theatre. A movie about vampires in the south in the 1930s centered around blues music shouldn’t work this well never the less be in the high 90s on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences a like.

The film stars Michael B Jordan in dual roles as Smoke and Stacks, twin brothers who are criminals who open a juke joint back in the south, alongside Hailee Steinfeld as Mary, Stack’s ex-girlfriend and introduces Miles Caton as Sammie “Preacher Boy” Moore, Smoke and Stack’s cousin and an aspiring blues musician. The official synopsis is: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

The movie taking place in the 1930s is a nice spin on things and touches on race in the south involving the KKK, cotton plantations, as well as spiritual elements and interesting story dealing with the connection of the blues and devil. We see strong performances from the whole cast and is hard to find a weak link. Ryan Coogler serves as the director, known for his directing work on the Black Panther films, as well as Creed, does a phenomenal job with Sinners and may have a nice run during award season because of it. I haven’t been a big fan of his films but this one might have changed my mind on the director. The movie does have a strange seen or two when it coms to music elements but kind of work given the what we are told at the beginning, one is when Sammie plays at the Juke joint, I’m sure when you watch it you will know what I mean.

Sinner’s is able to breathe fresh air into the vampire genre of films, as they have become rather one note, predictable and just brutal to sit through. Sinners breaks through it with an original story and take on vampires and putting it into a unique situation. As the title says it would be a sin to miss out on seeing Sinners

Final Grade: 9.5/10
