A new drama/comedy movie is set to take place in Northern Alberta with “Smudge The Blades.” The movie is created by Cody Lightning (of Smoke Signals fame) and Harlan Kingfisher. As the blades part of the name may suggest, yes it will be a hockey film, and joins a trend of “rez” based films like Rez Ball, which can be seen on Netflix.
“Smudge the Blades centers on the Treaty 6 Blades, an under-18 reservation hockey team hoping to make the most of the members’ final year of eligibility amid their violent league in northern Alberta. Samuel Miller co-wrote the script with Lightning.”
The film stars Lightning as a Zamboni driver who ends up coaching the team while trying catching the eyes of a hockey mom. If Cody Lightning isn’t a big enough name for you the film will also feature Ed Helm, best known for playing Andy on the American version of The Office and playing Stu in the Hangover films is apart of the film according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie has casted actual hockey players after a hockey casting call went out.
The film is expected to be released in 2026
