Slave Lake Wolves Back In NWJHL

They’ve been out of the league since 2014, but now the Slave Lake Wolves have returned to the NWJHL.

Team President Alex Pavcek says they’ve already got some strong support from several former players who are involved in the local business community.

“Using the Wolves name, we’re resurrecting a bit of history in the community. The nice thing is some of the players that used to play for the Wolves or be involved back in the day are now business owners or upper management in a lot of our businesses and they’re excited to bring now only their hockey knowledge but also their financial backing to the team.”

Pavcek says they will be working hard this summer to not only get players and coaches, but volunteers as well.

“Slave Lake I will say, in the years that I’ve been here, when the time comes everybody buckles down and gets it done. I believe with the excitement that we’re generating through our social media and word of mouth, there’s a lot of people that are ready to step up and help out. A lot of the alumni and their families, they want to see hockey come back to Slave Lake at this level and they’re excited to have junior B taking place again.”

The Wolves were one of the founding members of the league in 1994 and won the first three league championships.

When they folded in 2014, it was due to financial issues and a lack of players.
