The Peace Regional SPCA has reached full capacity and is now temporarily closed to all dog intakes.
Staff say in just the past three days, they’ve received around 20 requests from people looking to surrender their dogs. While they understand how difficult those decisions can be, the shelter says it simply doesn’t have space and is only able to add new requests to an already long waitlist.
At the same time, there’s been a surge in stray dogs being brought in, likely due to warmer weather. Many of these dogs are arriving with collars and tags—but surprisingly, remain unclaimed.
As of today, every kennel is full, with some dogs even sharing spaces. Staff warn that if more strays come in, they may have to resort to using crates, which is far from ideal.
The shelter is urging pet owners to keep dogs secure and ensure they have proper identification, like a collar, license, or microchip.
If you find a stray dog, you’re asked to call ahead before bringing it in.
Despite the challenges, the shelter reminds the public that many dogs are still waiting for homes—some for nearly a year—and encourages anyone considering a pet to adopt.
