River Watch – April 28, 4pm

Water levels along the East and West Prairie Rivers are beginning to stabilize, according to Alberta Rivers.

Despite this improvement, tributaries in the area remain under a Flood Warning.

Recent observations indicate that the river channels at the Highway 2 crossings, near High Prairie, are now free of ice.

As temperatures continue to rise, the remaining snowpack is expected to melt, which will likely lead to increasing water levels over the coming days.

River ice breakup is now underway along the Peace River between Highway 986 and the Notikewin River, with officials reporting a rapid rise in water levels late April 27.

At Berreth Flats, water levels increased by approximately three metres over a short period in the evening, an indication that an ice jam may have formed downstream. Authorities note that shifting ice is a normal part of the spring breakup process, and under current flow conditions, ice jams in this area do not typically lead to flooding.

Officials say river conditions will continue to be closely monitored for any further changes. Ice jam formation and release can trigger sudden and significant fluctuations in water levels, and the public is urged to use extreme caution near the riverbanks.

The advisory remains in effect to reflect evolving ice conditions and may be extended further downstream if necessary.
