Energy Alberta proceeds into Assessment stage of PR Nuclear project

energy-alberta-2

Energy Alberta has reached a major milestone in its proposed Peace River Nuclear Power Project, moving into the next phase of Canada’s federal review process with the launch of a formal impact assessment.

The project, led by Energy Alberta, will now undergo a comprehensive evaluation overseen by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. This marks a shift from early planning into a more rigorous, science-based review of potential environmental, social, health, and economic impacts.

The Peace River Nuclear Power Project will be assessed under one of the world’s strictest regulatory frameworks for nuclear development. Federal agencies have released key guiding documents, including plans for Indigenous engagement, public participation, and regulatory coordination.

Energy Alberta says Indigenous knowledge will play a central role, with direct collaboration and support for Indigenous-led studies already underway. The company is also engaging municipalities and local residents as part of the process.

The assessment phase is expected to take about two years, involving detailed studies on water systems, wildlife, land use, and community well-being.

If approved, the project could become a significant addition to Alberta’s energy landscape, but it must first pass a thorough and transparent review designed to ensure it is safe, responsible, and in the public interest.
