A sequel to the 1996 classic Happy Gilmore was finally released to Netflix this past weekend and it is a movie either you completely loved or you hated very little in between, I fall in the hated it category.
Sandler has been very hit and miss with comedy movies since the mid-2000’s, with either them bombing or getting a decent amount of laughs. In the Happy Gilmore sequel I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I laughed, with most of the comedy coming from Bad Bunny and Eminem, both have very little acting experience. While Christopher McDonald revived his character nicely the rest never translated.
Sadler substituted an original fun premise like the original was with flashbacks, and a ridiculous amount of cameos that most people wouldn’t recognize From current pro-athletes to musicians to comedians it was just jamming in somewhat famous people and his friends and family to distract from the terrible story. The villain is just nonsensical, and was supposed to be like a PGA vs LIV Golf storyline that made no sense. This gave me Zoolander 2 vibes which is not a good comparison you want.
If Netflix was paying me over $200 Million to do what i wanted regardless of quality I would phone it in to
