Terrazas de los Andes… High Altitude Vineyards.

I found the story behind our Wine Wednesday selection this week very interesting!

It all focuses around… Altitude. It’s something they are very particular about at Terrazas.

The grapes they choose to make their Malbec, have to come from the perfect altitude.
The 1070 to 1200 metre range is what is optimum for Mendoza Malbecs.

Why? Because the grapes grow in a rocky soil with low rainfall.  You’d think that would make it too difficult to grow the product you need to make a fine wine, right?
Apparently that helps the grapes, because they have to work so hard that they develop a more intense flavour.

The high altitude means warm sunny days are followed by cold nights, which slow down their ripening. This creates the flavour, and also limits acidity.

These spots along the Andes are hard to find.  Because of that, the company’s vineyards are spread out over 900km.  Further than traveling from High Level to Red Deer.
Maintaining those throughout a mountain range, can not be easy!

And they’ve put a lot of work into their wine.
“The new style of our Reserva Malbec represents a long quest for us, the conclusion of many years trying to get the best of every parcel. And the positive reactions we received from many wine lovers filled us with an ever more intense pride.”

I’d highly recommend trying this delicious glass of red.  Even if you aren’t usually a fan of Malbec’s, this one has a great flavour.  Much lighter than most.
