The wildfire situation in British Columbia continues to get worse.

About 14-thousand people have already been forced from their homes in the provinces’ interior.

As well, supplies are running low in the surrounding towns, with supply trucks being cut off due to related road closures.

As a result, various groups across the nation are collecting financial and supply donations to help the people affected by the raging infernos.

Here in the Peace Country, Willy’s Trucking Services is collecting donations at its depots.

In Peace River, Regional Manager Shelly Sorensen says people can come by at any time during business hours to make their donations.

“Our location in Fort St. John has actually set up a trailer, which will be heading down to Kamloops,” said Sorensen. “Our Peace River depot, as well as our depots in Grande Prairie and Edmonton, will also accept donations for our drivers to pick up.

“In Peace River, we’re open from 7 AM ‘til 5 PM,” she continued. “We’re located on the East Hill, just past the Northern Sunrise County office. Anyone looking to donate can call the depot at 780-624-2355, or my cell at 780-617-2325. We will make sure that somebody’s down there to take the donation so it can be loaded on to the truck.”

She adds that there is a list of urgently needed items on Facebook. They include non-perishable food, baby supplies (including diapers), pet supplies, as well as toiletry and hygiene products.

Sorensen, who is also the President of the Peace River & District Chamber of Commerce, says that they’ll also be taking donations at the Chamber office located by the traffic circle downtown. Business Hours there are from 8 AM until 4 PM.

“We are also looking at putting a truck at Freson Brothers if we do get an overwhelming response,” said Sorensen. “We did something similar to this last year during the wildfire crisis in Fort McMurray.

“But for now, we do have a truck going to Fort St. John every night,” she continued. “As well, we do have trucks going to Edmonton and to Grande Prairie, so we can send shipments at any time.”
