The Trending 55 Newsroom had a chance this week to talk with Peace River MLA Dan Williams.

One of the topics we asked him about was his new Parliamentary Secretary Role.

Williams says he’ll be working closely with the province’s francophone community.

“The Peace River area is an area of the province that has been historically francophone for generations. It is one of the most historically francophone. We have a huge percentage of the population, I think it’s somewhere near 20% of the entire francophone population in the province is in or originally from the Peace Country. We have a hug investment into our history and our culture up here.”

Williams also responded to some criticism he’s received from the NDP.

The Peace River MLA took heat from the NDP over comments made in the legislature about health care workers, and Williams says he was appalled by their accusations.

“The plan that AHS had would have closed access to healthcare to our most remote communities. I invite David Shepherd (the NDP’s Health Critic) to come up, I will pay for the gas, round trip from his downtown Edmonton condo to Manning and back. I want him to explain to the 65 year old retirees in Manning why they needed to lose their doctor whereas David Shepherd has got probably a couple thousand within a stones throw of his house.”
