Why are pork prices rising?

You may have noticed while browsing aisles in the grocery store, that bacon and other pork products are getting more and more pricey. This isn’t only an Alberta issue, but worldwide.

We spoke with Alberta Pork’s Executive Director, Darcy Fitzgerald on the matter. He says the processing facilities for the animals are a main cause of the prices rising. “I think it’s a case of labour issues really to be honest, and the ability to process meat inside the processing facilities.” Fitzgerald also says the number of people on a line in the facilities are limited with Covid-19 restrictions, so production has slowed down and it’s tightening up supply on the consumer end.

We also chatted about a wild boar issue arising in Alberta recently and how they are posing a threat to the pork industry.

You can listen to the full discussion below with Fitzgerald and tune into the River Country Ag Show every week day during the noon hour!
