Warkentin Criticizing Federal “Just Transition” Plan

The “just transition” plan from the federal government for oil and gas workers is getting criticism from Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin.

Warkentin is calling it quote “another attack on Alberta’s energy sector.”

“We know that the Prime Minister has had an ideological opposition to the energy sector. He opposes the wealth that it brings in and the jobs that it creates here in the Peace Country and throughout Alberta and much of the western provinces. He has been attacking it for years and it just seems like another one of those attempts and I’m going to be there on the forefront fighting this legislation when it is brought forward.”

The federal government says the plan is not about shutting down oil and gas but rather providing a training and incentive blueprint for workers to make a seamless transition as the world moves to a less carbon-intensive economy.

Warkentin says Canada should be providing more of the world’s energy, not less.

“We know that there’s countries around the world that are looking to Canada to supply clean, efficient, and affordable energy for countries like Japan and Europe. So many countries are trying to wean themselves off dependence like places like Russia and other unstable places around the world and looking to Canada to supply those energy needs.”
