A federal government bill is being stalled in the senate that would provide some carbon tax relief for farmers.

Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen says the Conservative Bill C-234 would remove the tax from grain drying, barn heating and other farm operations.

“We’ve seen the government already give allowances for its removal on home heating in some parts of the country and the farmers have been saying we need to insure that we don’t have to pay the carbon tax because that cost just gets passed on to the consumer which just makes our food more expensive. This bill has been passed through the House of Commons, but it’s getting stalled in the Senate.”

Earlier this week, Viersen joined a rally on Parliament Hill that farmers put on calling on the senate to pass the bill.

Viersen adds that he wants to see it passed without any amendments.

“It covers the carbon tax on grain drying, it covers the carbon tax that they pay to heat their buildings and it covers the carbon tax on some of the transportation costs that they include. There was amendments put forward by some of the Liberal senators to remove on the building part, so we’ve been saying don’t put that amendment in, just pass the bill the way it was originally.”
