Veterans’ grave markers getting fixed around the Peace Region

Veterans’ grave markers across the Peace Country have been getting the care they deserve thanks to Peace Valley Funeral Homes, being selected by Veterans Affairs Canada to do maintenance on the graves.

Over time, the grave markers can start to lean and even fall over. Also wear and tear from weather, wildlife and foliage can cause damage. Many graves have been identified to need as little as just a cleaning or as much as replacing entirely.

Owner of Peace Valley Funeral Home, Kristi Heck says “We are honoured to be apart of the program. This is one thing our family to everyone else, we can help. That is always our main goal.” Heck says her team will be working on this project until the snow hits the ground and it starts to freeze.

“It’s a nice way to pay some respects, get everything tidied up and looking good.” Heck added it’s just in time before Remembrance Day.

The work is part of a larger program by Veterans Affairs Canada that spreads across the country called the Veterans Affairs Canada’s Grave Marker Maintenance Program. The work over the next few weeks will be done in cemeteries in Peace River and Fairview, the MDs of Saddle Hills, Spirit River, Birch Hills, Fairview, Smoky River, and Peace River.
