Athabasca RCMP on scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision– update

Athabasca, Alta. –  On Feb. 1, 2024, Athabasca RCMP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 2 and Highway 661. The Highways were initially closed for travel and reopened later that day. Alberta RCMP thanks the public for their cooperation with regards to the closures.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation but preliminary findings suggest that a pickup truck crossed into the oncoming lane colliding head-on with a semi-truck. Both occupants of the pickup truck, a 69-year-old male resident of Nampa, Alta., and a 73-year-old male resident of Donnelly, Alta., were declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of the semi-truck did not report any injures.

Alberta RCMP wish to extend their condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.

Athabasca, Alta. – Athabasca RCMP are currently on scene of a fatal collision on Highway 2 and Highway 661. This section of the Highway will be closed in both directions while emergency personnel respond. RCMP Collision Analysts are also on route to conduct their investigation.

At this time, members the public are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of transit.

A release is anticipated once the highway is reopened and more details become available.
