Alberta’s Transportation Minister says the Province will continue its investments into highway work in the Peace Region.

Rajan Sawhney was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat and highlighted the importance of how highways can affect trade and the economy.

“Certainly what we’ve seen with the BC storms has really highlighted and emphasized the fact that infrastructure is very important for trade and the economy and supply chains. That is something I’ll be focusing on more carefully, specifically up in the North. There’s so much potential to create more economic corridors and agri-foods corridors.”

Sawhney also says she will meet with the new council at the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement as work continues on building the bridge to replace the La Crete ferry.

The project is still in its early stages but she calls it “an important economic driver for the region.”

“It will be the first project under the FAST (Financing Alberta’s Strategic Transportation) act. So there will be some tolling involved until we can recover the capital and it was quite supported by many members of the local community, but there’s a lot of work to be done. I think job number one is to meet the new council and sit down with them and listen to them, listen to their perspectives and viewpoints and talk about the project.”
