Train Derailment in High Prairie…

Update from the Town of High Prairie, Alberta
Yesterday afternoon there was a CN train derailment in the area of highway 749 and 50th avenue. CN crews have responded to the derailment, preliminary information indicates that approximately 14 railcars derailed in various positions. There are no reports of fires, injuries or dangerous goods involved. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
For an undermined time, traffic rerouting will be required in the 50th avenue area.

A three-car train derailment has occurred at 50th Avenue and Highway 749 in the Town of High Prairie.
A detour route will be required on Big Lakes County Roads for at least 24 hours. The route for east bound traffic will proceed easterly from Highway 749 on Twp Rd 742a for 2 miles and then north of Range Road 165 for 1 mile back to Highway 2.
For westbound traffic, the route will proceed westerly from Highway 749 on Township Rd 740, the Gilwood Road, for two miles to Range Road 173, then north for four miles to Highway 2.
Signage will be placed by Alberta Transportation and road conditions monitored by Big Lakes County.

On January 11, 2023, at 2:49pm a train derailed at 50th Avenue and Hwy 749 in the Town of High Prairie causing grain cars to go off track.
There are no public safety concerns.
Traffic is being rerouted around the incident. Please avoid Railroad Avenue and obey traffic control for alternative routes.
