- Police in Valleyview have confirmed that one person is dead from a late night accident on Highway 43.
The RCMP investigation revealed that a cyclist was travelling in the middle of a westbound lane and was not seen by a Semi-Truck until it was too late. - Alberta Health Services has announced new potential measles exposures, including in Peace River.
AHS says the potential exposure happened at the Peace River Community Health Centre Emergency Department between 9:20 pm on April 15, and 1 am on April 16. - Alberta now has a new Interim Chief Medical Officer of Health. Dr. Sunil Sookram replaces Dr. Mark Joffe, effective immediately.
Joffe spent three years at his post, with his most recent pressing issue beiong the Measles Outbreak, that started in Northern Alberta. - Registration is continuing for school division in the Northwest for the 2026 School year.
The Holy Family Catholic Regional Division heads into next year with new schools on the plans, and continued success happening. (Betty Turpin Interview in separate story) - Affordability has been one of the major themes of this federal election campaign.
Arnold Viersen, the Conservative candidate for Peace River-Westlock, says his party’s platform has a number of measures for addressing that. (Interview in separate story) - Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Campaign is getting set to go next week in the Northwest, and orders are already coming in. The Campaign runs from April 28th to May 4th.
- In the NWJHL, the North Peace Navigators have announced another new player signing, High Prairie product Kyler Anderson.
Anderson is a forward who played this season with the Indigenous Sports Academy U17 team in the CSSHL. - Local baseball season is right around the corner… The Peace River Stampeders of the Wheatbelt Baseball League are holding tryouts tonight, 6:30 at the Ski Hill.
Meanwhile, the Manning Mets are continuing their fundraising efforts with a cornhole tournament on Friday May 9th at the Legion hall.
The High Prairie Sauce have released a tentative schedule for the 2025 Baseball season. Their first game is listed as Wednesday May 14, at home to Peace River. - AJHL Finals tonight… Game 3 – Calgary is in Grande Prairie, the Canucks lead 2-0.
- NHL Playoffs tonight… Game 2 – Ottawa is in Toronto, the Leafs took the opening game. Game 2 – New Jersey is in Carolina, the Hurricanes took the opener.
Game 2 – Minnesota is in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights won the opener. Game 1 – Florida is in Tampa Bay. - The Toronto Blue Jays play the second game of their series in Houston tonight. Chris Bassitt starts for the Jays against Ronel Blanco.
- A mix of sun and cloud is forecasted for the Northwest this afternoon. Highs are remaining in the low teens, with lows tonight at, or just below freezing.
The sunshine continues for the rest of this week, and digits are beginning to nudge higher, to the point where 20 could be reached by Friday.
