Our Subway Athlete of the Month for September is Kale Helgeson.
He’s a baseball player with the Rycroft Rage of the Wheatbelt Baseball League. The Rage were the winners of the Wheatbelt Baseball League championship this season, finishing the regular season in first place, then beating Manning and Grande Prairie in the playoffs.
Helgeson credits some of the younger players on the team with helping them beat the Grande Prairie Brewers in the finals.
“We really got key hits at key times. We had a really good team this year and it was a lot of fun.”
The league returned to play this season after being unable to play in 2020 because of the pandemic. All five teams (Peace River, Grimshaw, Manning, Rycroft and Grande Prairie) were able to play, but Helgeson would like to see more teams in the league.
“We used to have teams in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. It would be awesome if the league could expand and we could play different teams and different guys.”
