River Road in Peace River to remain closed for the foreseeable future

According to a representative with Alberta Transportation, the route under the Peace River Bridge will remain closed.

Peace River Town Council heard a presentation from Ryan Konowalyk with Alberta Transportation and told officials it would likely open in the fall.

River road goes along the bank of the Mighty Peace and is one of three routes within town connecting the north end to the south side.

Konowalyk told councillors that the original plan was to have the new and older bridges open at the same time for a period of two years, but due to the pandemic, those plans were shelved.

He mentioned that the existing bridge will be re-decked, which will keep River Road closed.

“The original plan was to finish the new bridge and have it open with the old bridge open,” Konowalyk told council last night.

He added that the deck rehab on the old bridge is being fast tracked as part of the province’s goal to get people working to stimulate the economy.

The road is expected to be closed until the fall as the eastbound deck gets redone and utilities are moved.
