RCMP Discusses Some Safety Tips With School Now Open

The school year is now well underway in the Peace Country.

And the RCMP has some tips for both the students, and for motorists, on what to do during school zone hours.

“Drivers need to be more aware of school zones and signals now that school’s back,” Constable Kayla Dubrowski said from High Prairie. “They need to reduce speed in a school zone, and to be prepared to stop at all times, as children are often slow to cross, and forget to look both ways.”

As for students, Dubrowski told that Trending 55 Newsroom that they need to stick to the sidewalks when they go to school.

“Always cross at the intersections, don’t just do it anywhere,” she said. “Just wait for the crosswalks to be available. Always make sure the kids look both ways, and also make sure it’s safe to cross the crosswalks before you do so.

“There often are crossing guards at major intersections,” Dubrowski continued. “But if there aren’t, make sure the kids look both ways before crossing. Stop, Look and Listen is a major thing for traffic, not just for the motorist, but for the kids, who need to be paying attention as well.”

She adds that a buddy system is also a good idea in order to reduce the risk of an accident involving a pedestrian.

As well, police say that motorist and pedestrians alike need to abide by all traffic signs and signals.
